I. PURPOSE
Stonebridge World School is committed to the success of every student. Our mission is to create an environment with a global perspective that prepares students to excel academically. Our vision is to develop motivated and principled global citizens for lifelong learning and productive citizenship.
II. GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY
A. Stonebridge World School is committed to the physical safety and emotional well-being of all students within its control and is committed to ensuring that our building is a welcoming and safe place for students and their families.
B. It is not the mission, purpose, or role of Stonebridge World School to determine the citizenship or immigration status of any of its students or families, nor to enforce federal immigration laws.
C. Stonebridge World School has adopted policies ensuring the provision of equal educational opportunities to all enrolled students, regardless of their immigration status, national origin, or language.
D. Stonebridge World School believes that it is in the best interests of the students, staff, families, and community to take action against disruptions to the educational environment and shall not be tolerated.
III. DEFINITIONS
A. “Citizenship or immigration status” means all matters regarding questions of citizenship of the United States or any other country, the authority to reside in or otherwise be present in the United States, the time or manner of a person’s entry into the United States, or any other civil immigration matter enforced by the Department of Homeland Security or other federal agency charged with the enforcement of civil immigration law.
B. “Immigration agent” or “ICE” shall mean an agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, any individuals authorized to conduct enforcement of civil immigration laws under 8 U.S.C. §1357(g) or any federal law, other federal agents charges with enforcement of civil immigration laws and any successors.
C. “National Origin or Immigration Status Discrimination” refers to treating students and family members unfavorably because of their actual or perceived place of birth, country of origin, ancestry, native language, accent, citizenship, immigration status, or because they are perceived as looking or sounding “foreign.”
IV. NON-DISCRIMINATION
Stonebridge World School expressly prohibits any discriminatory act that denies or reduces educational opportunities because of a student or family member’s actual or perceived place of birth, country of origin, ancestry, native language, accent, citizenship, immigration status, need for language translation, English language fluency level or perceived as looking or sounding as an individual whose national origin is not the United States.
Any individual who believes they have been the recipient of any discriminatory action related to national origin or immigration status should notify the Executive or School Director.
V. RESOLUTIONS
Unless specifically required by law, employees, contractors, volunteers, and representatives will not use resources solely for the purposes of detecting or assisting in the apprehension of persons whose only violation of law is being an undocumented resident in the United States or failing to produce documents authorizing residency in the United States.
A. Employees, contractors, volunteers, and representatives shall not inquire about a student’s or parent’s immigration status.
B. Employees, contractors, volunteers, and representatives shall not require any student or parent to produce documentation regarding immigration status.
C. Employees, contractors, volunteers, and representatives shall not, unless compelled by a valid court order, by law, or subsequent to receiving a signed release, disclose to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers any information about a student’s or family’s immigration status.
D. Employees, contractors, volunteers, and representatives shall require any ICE personnel requesting data or wishing to enter school property to immediately notify the Executive Director or designee in advance of such entry and provide proper written authority to enter the property.
E. Employees, contractors, volunteers, and representatives shall not refer students and parents with questions about their immigration status to ICE.
F. Employees, contractors, volunteers, and representatives shall continue to ensure that all students have access to the learning and other educational services available at their schools, including rigorous courses, student extracurricular activities, and athletics, and support regardless of the student’s or family’s immigration status.
